What Happened When I Cut Out Processed Sugar
Seven months ago, I made a decision that seemed pretty simple: I was going to completely cut out processed sugar from my diet.
I wasn't expecting it to change my life.
But looking back now, the difference is hard to ignore.
One of the biggest changes I've noticed is in my rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. The pain and inflammation that had become such a normal part of my life have been dramatically reduced. I know everyone's body responds differently to dietary changes, and I would never tell someone that cutting sugar is a "cure" for RA. But for me personally, the difference has been undeniable.
And then something happened that I honestly didn't expect at all.
My menstrual cycle immediately began syncing with the moon cycles, and the excruciating period and ovulation pain I had experienced since I was 13 years old completely disappeared.
Seven months.
That's how long it has been since I've needed to take a single pain pill for my cycle, or anything else for that matter.
Not one.
For someone who used to take what felt like an entire pharmacy's worth of Advil between my RA pain, period pain, and ovulation pain, that feels absolutely wild. Honestly, Advil and I should probably have had a loyalty program at this point.
But perhaps the most surprising change has been my hair.
I've been struggling with Alopecia since 2019. My hair would go through cycles of significant shedding two or three times a year, and every time it happened, it was incredibly frustrating and emotional. I would have a mini emotional breakdown in the shower as I watched clumps of my beautiful hair slide to the shower floor.
For the past seven months, I haven't experienced even one of those major shedding episodes.
My hair has been flourishing.
Again, I want to be very clear: I'm sharing my personal experience, not prescribing a diet or claiming that eliminating processed sugar will produce these exact results for everyone. There are many factors that can influence inflammation, menstrual health, and hair growth.
But I do believe there's something incredibly powerful about paying attention to how your body responds to what you're putting into it.
For me, reducing processed sugar wasn't about punishment, restriction, or trying to achieve some perfect diet.
It was about giving my body a chance to tell me what it needed.
And seven months later, I'm listening.
My pain is different.
My relationship with food is different.
My cycle is different.
My hair is different.
And most importantly, I feel different.
Sometimes the most powerful changes aren't found in another supplement, another medication, or another extreme wellness trend.
Sometimes they start with something as simple as asking:
"What would happen if I stopped giving my body so much of what it doesn't need, and started giving it more of what it does?"
