Carnivore. Vegan. Keto. Paleo. Sugar-free. Low-carb.
There are countless approaches to weight loss, but they all have one thing in common:
For body weight to decrease over time, you need a calorie deficit.
What Is a Calorie Deficit?
Your body burns energy every day simply to stay alive, move, digest food, exercise, and perform normal bodily functions.
A calorie deficit happens when, over time, you consume fewer calories than your body uses. Your body then has to draw on stored energy to make up the difference.
This is why simply changing what you eat doesn't necessarily mean you'll lose weight.
You can eliminate sugar, carbs, meat, dairy, or processed foods and still consume enough calories to maintain your current weight.
So, Why Do Different Diets Work?
Keto, vegan, carnivore, intermittent fasting, and other approaches can work because they may help people eat fewer calories without realizing it.
Cutting out certain foods, increasing protein or fiber, or limiting your eating window may reduce your overall calorie intake.
The diet provides the structure. The calorie deficit drives the weight loss.
But Calories Aren't Everything
Calories matter for weight loss, but food quality matters for your health and body composition.
That's why I encourage my clients to focus on more than just eating less:
Protein to support and preserve lean muscle
Fiber for fullness, digestion, and gut health
Whole, nutrient-dense foods to nourish the body
Strength training to preserve muscle while losing fat
Sleep, recovery, and stress management to support healthy habits and consistency
Hormones, medications, menopause, and certain health conditions can also affect appetite, energy expenditure, fluid retention, and how easy or difficult weight management feels.
You Don't Need Another Extreme Diet
You don't necessarily need to eliminate carbs, become vegan, eat only meat, or swear off your favorite foods forever.
You need a nutrition strategy that helps you maintain an appropriate calorie deficit while still nourishing your body and one you can actually stick to.
Because the best nutrition plan isn't the one you can survive for 30 days.
It's the one you can turn into a lifestyle.
